I am the Medsin National Director - a very exciting privilege. When not doing Medsin, I'm doing Medicine at UCL or cooking. Prior to this year, I have been Regional Coordinator and UCL Branch President. Always feel free to get in touch -

Handover day is upon us! The new National Committee now officially takes its place as the next leadership of Medsin. It is a very exciting time for all of us, as we start what has for a while been called “the year ahead”. As soon as we have plans confirmed, we’ll be sharing those with you, but throughout this coming year, I want to ensure you are kept up-to-date with what National Committee is doing.

It’s a pleasure to have Kati Lestak joining us, who will be filling the Director of Branch Affairs role following your vote. The National Committee now looks like this:

National Director: Layth Hanbali (hellooooo!)

Director of Branch Affairs: Kati Lestak

Director of International Affairs: Natasha Matthews

Secretary: Matt Quinn

Communications Director: Emma Pencheon

Global Health Education Director: Julia Marr

Policy and Advocacy Director: Lotte Elton

Affiliates Coordinator: Alex Peterson

Training Director: Lisa Murphy

National Exchanges Officer (Incoming): Jess Lugsdin

National Exchanges Officer (Outgoing): Phoebe Sharratt

National Officer for Research Exchanges: Ben Nuttall

Regional Coordinator (Scotland & Northern Ireland): Sam Tweed

Regional Coordinator (North): Clare Greenwood

Regional Coordinator (South East): Amy Cleese

Regional Coordinator (South West): Laurence Wright

This leaves us with two spots to fill over the coming few weeks:

  • Midlands Regional Coordinator to support Kati’s and the Regional Coordinators’ work with branches
  • Director of Finance, to increase our fundraising capacity

If you’re interested in either, get in touch - An official call, for these, and for National Committee Operational Teams, will be going out to you soon.

Most of our work at the moment is preparation, planning and getting excited about taking our places in the leadership of the most impressive student organisation around. Our first in-person meeting will take place in Bristol on the 19th and 20th of September, and it looks like it’s going to be a full house! If there is anything you would like us to discuss, please fill in the form here. Between now and the meeting, each member of the National Committee will be forming a working plan for the year, and we will finalise an overall plan for NC at this meeting. All of these will be shared with you, with a chance to give us feedback!

Medsin National Conference in Sheffield is just over 6 weeks away, and tickets will be available VERY SHORTLY! Check out Our first General Assembly, Medsin Autumn Weekend in Cardiff, is 3 weeks after that, and that is where we will be discussing Medsin’s next strategy (see below)! So much happening, so much happiness. We look forward to meeting hundreds of you at those two weekends.

Another source of excitement is working on our Long Term Development Plan (2015-18), that I mentioned in my last blog. You can now feed your views as to what Medsin should do and look like over the next 3 years by filling out this form. So good! Please fill it in, that way we’ll make up less of the final result, which can only be a good thing… We’ll present our findings as we go along to make sure you’re happy with it every step of the way. For those of you who are unsure, I’ve written a blog to explain why I think strategy is important for Medsin.

Last thing (nearly there): we are exploring the opportunity to partner up on some specific projects, such as global surgery and poverty, with some external organisations. We’ll be discussing the proposals among National Committee, and will then ask for your opinions once we have a better idea of what’s going on, so watch your inboxes for those!

Medsin love,
