Kicking off September with a joint handover training session with Cardiff Medsin made for a great start. It provided the perfect chance to get to know each other as a committee and use strategic planning training to develop our ideas for the year.

On the back of this initial momentum, we held an open meeting for Medsin members new and old to share ideas for events and campaigns for the coming term. 30 people came with their own brilliant ideas and we left the meeting having set up 5 focus groups. We decided this arrangement was the best way to channel our enthusiasm into the areas we felt were our biggest priorities: the Refugee Crisis, Homelessness in Bristol, Gender Equity, Mental Health and setting up International Exchanges.

The homelessness team aim to raise awareness about the critical levels of homelessness in Bristol while challenging any prejudices people hold. We are working towards hosting a photography exhibition displaying photos taken on disposal cameras by members of the homeless community to give them an opportunity to tell their own story.

The coordinated theme of gender equity has just been launched, with a screening on the film Desert Flower which raises important questions about FGM and human trafficking, followed by discussion facilitated by Bristol’s own Integrate. Integrate are an inspiring organisation of young people who have gained global recognition for their campaigns to end of FGM.

Lastly, we are very excited to have brand new branches of Healthy Planet and UAEM in Bristol this year to bring people’s attention to these critical issues in global health. We can’t wait to collaborate with them throughout the year. The next thing in the diary in an open training session to bring Medsin to the members in Bristol and build capacity!
